ROLE: Urban Designer
CLIENT: University of New South Wales
The University of NSW was contemplating the creation of a new urban campus in Canberra on the Canberra Institute of Technology site on Constitution Avenue, just east of Civic. AECOM was asked to support the preparation of a preliminary planning and site design to support the creation of a new campus for 5,000 students.
This analysis required a mix of student housing, academic facilities and support services. Furthermore, aspects of the academic program needed higher security facilities than would typically be required on a university campus.
Constitution Avenue is an essential space in Canberra and is a crucial part of the Griffin Legacy. The concept plan sought to reinforce this role through active uses at the heart of the university campus, bisected by this important street. The building form defined the Avenue and anticipated the addition of a future light-rail line connecting Civic to the Airport.
I was the lead urban designer, facilities planner, and yield analyser for this study.
UNSW has decided to proceed with the project.
“UNSW Canberra is establishing a new campus in Canberra’s CBD. Building on the University’s achievements, the new campus will allow us to expand our offerings in Canberra by delivering world-class education, research and innovation within the Parliamentary Triangle.”
