Design Bureau is a part of the internal multi-disciplined team charged with master planning, rezoning, and implementation of a pivotal new precinct in Sydney at Central Station.
Central is Australia’s largest transport interchange. With the adoption of the master plan, a new innovation hub will be built over the existing railway yard and platforms. Extensive new areas of open space and plazas, new community connections, and cultural facilities will be created in the development of this very complex project.
Reflecting Central Station’s important role in Sydney and NSW and in recognition of its potential to boost investment and deliver jobs, the NSW Government nominated 24 hectares of Government-owned land in and around the station as a State Significant Precinct. Divided into eight sub-precincts, the renewal of the Central Precinct will positively respond to the varying character of the surrounding areas of Surry Hills, Chippendale and Haymarket.
Design Firms: Architectus/Tyrrell Landscape (Precinct), Grimshaw/TKD (Terminal).

“Central Precinct will be a vibrant and exciting place that unites a world-class interchange with innovative and diverse businesses and high-quality public spaces.
It will embrace design, sustainability and connectivity, celebrate its unique built form and social and cultural heritage and become a centre for the future and economic growth.”
Transport for NSW, 2021
We supported Transport for NSW, Architectus, and Tyrrell Landscape in preparing a State Significant Precinct (SSP) Study to secure the precinct's rezoning. This involved extensive community and stakeholder consultation and detailed studies, including wind, heritage, cultural activation, and Connection to Country.
The project has also successfully undertaken a robust design review process with the State Design Review Panel, along with regular engagement with the City of Sydney and DPHI.
Upon completion, the project will create about 500,000 sq.m of new innovation-focused commercial, education, hotel, and retail space and reshape the Sydney CBD.
Design Bureau (on Wallumedegal land) acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live, work, and thrive.
We respect and learn from their cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters, sky, and communities and their enduring contributions.
